Riverside, Avondale and Ortega line the St. Johns River just south of Downtown Jacksonville and make up some of the city's best-known historic neighborhoods. Riverside grew quickly after the Great Fire of 1901 and is known for its many bungalows, while most Avondale homes date to the 1920s land boom, in styles from Prairie School and Craftsman to Mediterranean Revival. Five Points and the King Street District add shops and restaurants close to home. Ortega sits on a peninsula between the St. Johns and Ortega rivers, crossed by Roosevelt Boulevard (US 17), and NAS Jacksonville is just to its south, generally within about 9 miles of anywhere in this area.
