Durkeeville is a historic neighborhood in Jacksonville, northwest of Downtown and the Springfield area, and one of the city's long-established African American communities. Its streets carry deep local roots, with churches, small businesses and Edward Waters University, Florida's oldest historically Black university, standing nearby as anchors of the wider area. The housing is largely older single-family homes on modest lots, a mix of cottages, bungalows and vernacular houses that reflect the neighborhood's early growth, set along a traditional street grid rather than a modern subdivision plan. Kings Road and the avenues running toward Downtown put the city center, the St. Johns River and the sports district within a short drive. Public schools are part of Duval County Public Schools.
