East Callahan is a residential area on the eastern side of Callahan, the Nassau County town at the crossroads of the main highways through western Nassau, north of Jacksonville. Callahan is a working railroad and timber town with a small commercial center, and its eastern edge shades into the pine flatwoods, pastures and creek bottoms that cover much of the county away from Amelia Island. East Callahan shares that rural-residential character, a subdivision area of homes on comparatively open land, where the St. Marys River country begins to the north and the Nassau River marshes lie to the south. Fernandina Beach and the coast are an easy drive east, and Jacksonville's Northside is the same distance south. Public schools are part of the Nassau County School District.
