LaVilla is one of Jacksonville's oldest neighborhoods, lying immediately west of Downtown Jacksonville and the St. Johns River in Duval County. Once a separate town and later a center of African American cultural and business life, with West Ashley Street at its heart, the district still carries that history in its churches, the Ritz Theatre and its street grid of older blocks. Housing in and around LaVilla and North LaVilla mixes older homes on established streets with newer infill construction closer to downtown, and the area sits within walking distance of the central business district for some blocks. Public schools are part of Duval County Public Schools. The neighborhood adjoins the Brooklyn and Riverside districts across the railroad corridor, and Interstate 95 passes along its southern edge.
