Lincoln City is a historic neighborhood in Hawthorne, in eastern Alachua County southeast of Gainesville along the US 301 corridor. Founded in the late 1860s by formerly enslaved people, it is one of the oldest African American communities in the county, and its churches, cemetery and long-held family lots still anchor this side of town. The neighborhood is residential and unhurried, with single-family homes on local streets under live oaks, set in the gently rolling, lake-dotted country around Hawthorne. It sits apart from the commercial strip on the highway, in a rural small-town setting where Hawthorne's schools, library and city services are minutes away and Gainesville is an easy drive north. Public schools belong to Alachua County Public Schools. Homes in Lincoln City come to market only occasionally, reflecting how long many properties stay within the same families.
