Spring Hill is a large unincorporated community in Hernando County, on Florida's Gulf side north of Tampa, a long way from the Atlantic coast. It began in the 1960s as a planned development laid out across the low limestone hills inland from US 19, and it has grown into one of the biggest residential areas on this part of the coast, street after street of detached single-family homes around local shopping corridors such as Mariner Boulevard and Spring Hill Drive. The Suncoast Parkway connects the community south toward Tampa, while Weeki Wachee and the Gulf shoreline lie to the west. There is no old downtown here; Spring Hill's character is suburban and residential, built around its subdivisions, schools and commercial strips. Public schools are part of Hernando County Schools.
