Southwest St. Johns County is the farm country of the county, west and south of St. Augustine along State Road 207 and the St. Johns River, taking in Hastings, Elkton, Molasses Junction, Tocoi, Riverdale and Flagler Estates. Hastings was founded around 1890 when Henry Flagler's cousin Thomas Hastings started a farm to supply Flagler's St. Augustine hotels, and it is still known as the Potato Capital of Florida. Flagler Estates, near the Flagler County line, is laid out in large residential lots. Homes here lean toward rural properties and houses on larger lots, along with newer subdivisions such as Cypress Lakes and Country Walk near Elkton. It is a long drive to the bases, about 50 miles to NAS Jacksonville from Hastings. Public schools are part of the St. Johns County School District.
